The For Your Beauty Jax team sat down with Romney Smith, Morning Anchor and Reporter at Action News Jax to talk fashion, beauty and career.

Where are you originally from, and how long have you worked at Action News Jax?
I was born in New York City, but raised in Marietta, Georgia.  I’ve been at Action News Jax since December 2013.

What made you decide to get into TV News?
I loved watching the news growing up and love telling stories.  I wanted to see if I could make a difference in my community and keep people informed on local, regional and national topics of interest.

How would you describe your fashion style?
Comfortable chic!  Is that a category?   It is impossible to look glam all the time so if I can be cute and comfortable, I call that a successful outfit.

Where is your favorite place in Jacksonville to shop for work attire?  What about ‘everyday’ attire?
For work and personal I like to mix it up.  I shop everywhere from Target to Nordstrom to Amazon to my friend’s closets!  If I had to pick one place to shop I would say my “go to” place is Ross.  It takes a while to hunt, but there are some really good deals there!  I’ve learned to mix high and low to give myself more options and not break the bank.

What is your must-have beauty/cosmetic product?
Makeup primer!  I will not put on makeup if I don’t have primer on!  It makes everything I apply have a consistently fresh look for the entire day.  I look at it like clothing.  If you don’t have the right undergarments on, you could mess up an amazing outfit!  Don’t mess up that amazing makeup, put some primer on first so it lasts all day.

What is your must-have hair product?
Aveda anti-humectant pomade. Especially living in Florida where it can rain, be humid and your hair does not want to lay perfectly.  Whether I have my natural curls or if my hair is pressed straight for work, a light coat of this on my hair keeps all of the frizz and fly-aways at bay!

Tell us one of your beauty secrets or beauty tricks.
I use eye cream on my entire face! It works so well on my under eyes I decided to try it on other areas of my face. It is a nightly ritual now!

What question are you asked most often by the public?
It’s a non-Beauty question: “What time do you wake up?” I am on air at 4:30 a.m. every morning waking people up with the latest news, weather and traffic so people understand I get up very early to prepare for the workday! My alarm goes off at 2 a.m. and occasionally I sleep in until 2:15 a.m.

What is something we might not know about you?
I was a professional cheerleader for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens 10 years ago!  It was a lot of fun, but extremely difficult to stay in tip top shape to fit in that small sparkly outfit.

Who is your role model and why?
My mother is my favorite role model.  She has played many roles over the years and I love that the older I get, I see more of her in me.  She’s a woman of strength, beauty, intelligence, resilience with high moral and ethical standards.  She’s funny, classy, and thoughtful and has LOTS of sass!  In my mind, there is nothing that she can’t do and I’m blessed to have her.

What is the best advice (professional or personal) that someone has given you?
“All it takes is all you got!”   One of my high school coaches used to yell that at every practice.  He would emphasize that if we are giving our all, we can never be disappointed with our performance whether we win or lose.  He also added our effort will always reveal how bad we really want something.

What advice or words of encouragement would you give to young women who are interested in pursuing a career in broadcast journalism?
Stay curious, work hard, and do your research for what path you want your steer your career in.  Don’t shrink to fit someone else’s perception of what you should be, follow your passion, don’t cut corners, learn from mistakes and try not to repeat them. MOST OF ALL…remember that every story, no matter how small, is the reason someone is watching the news.  What you do every day matters, so make it count.
